The Spirit of Understanding

by Greg Crawford

With so much talk about what is happening I have yet to find a clear "connector" that would touch all things I am not saying that I'm anything special, but I do honestly believe the Holy Spirit has revealed to me what the coming awakening will actually entail. The following revelation is still expanding in my spirit as I see it as a hidden nugget that has come to light.

There is a special grace that is setting on the church in this hour. It is a grace that releases our identity, reveals our purpose, and empowers us to flow in the spirit. All of these were part of the early community of the church of Acts. We've strove for a long time to try to mimic or copy or find the missing ingredient of what the church in the Book of Acts actually had that we are lacking. For the Pentecostals and full Gospel, they say it's the Holy Spirit. For more traditional thinking, they say it's the love factor. Still others say it is just for that time and season and moment upon the earth.

As our ministry has recently moved to our state capital the Lord specifically spoke to me and said "you will not change the structures, but I'm calling you to change the culture of the church." This has taken me on a journey to understand exactly what that culture is, and how it is to function and look.

The Spirit of Understanding

God desires for us to have a spiritual community that currently is not in place. What causes this spiritual community? How could the early church grow so quickly, and yet not have a very true discipleship program? How could some get saved one day and suddenly be in ministry the next? There had to be a sense of a spiritual community or a factor that they had that we somehow have misplaced. The Lord spoke to me and showed me that it is the Spirit of Understanding, one of the seven fold spirit of Christ that also descended at the time of Pentecost. He began to speak to me that Pentecost held not just the baptism of the Holy Spirit, but it also was the point that all seven fold spirits of Christ of Isaiah 11 was loosed upon the church. I am just now beginning to do an in-depth study on this, and for now will only cover the spirit of understanding.

As you look at the outpouring in the book of Acts we see the church moved from a dynamic of loving Jesus, to loving each other. They esteemed Jesus in the Gospels but did not esteem each other, and the spirit of competition, jealousy, and buying for position was very evident. After Pentecost none of these were present. There was something that was beyond being filled with the Holy Spirit and speaking in tongues. It was the actually empowering of the spirit, or having the nature of God.

More Than Tongues And The Baptism of The Holy Ghost Happened At Pentecost

Before Pentecost the disciples would give their lives for Christ. But after Pentecost they would give their lives for each other. This is very evident and acts chapter 3 Peter ministers to the man at the gate beautiful and both he and John are imprisoned. There was something that enabled John to enter into the sufferings of Peter his brother as well as the sufferings of Christ. This is more than us just speaking in tongues in a meeting today. Or saying we are filled with the Holy Spirit.

I am not degrading or devaluing being filled the Holy Spirit. But I'm looking for what happened that brought the sense of community into the early church. What enable people to sell lands and homes to give to those in need? What enabled people to come out of a religious structure that was carrying no meaning and had no power into a sense of community that they were willing to sacrifice all and had complete understanding of the value it held? I tell you it is the Spirit of Understanding one of the seven fold spirits of God that came upon the church at the same time they were filled with the Holy Spirit. The baptism of the Spirit also was a baptism of the Spirit of Understanding. Not only did the early church come into identity, purpose, and their destiny, but they also were infused with the Spirit of Understanding that as they left the upper room, others were able to know the wonders of God. That does not come because they spoke in each person's own language but because there was also the spirit of understanding coming out of their very been enabling people to see and perceive things about God that they had never been able to do.

Acts 2:1-7 (KJV)
1And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. 3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. 5 And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven. 6 Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language. 7 And they were all amazed and marveled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galileans?

Confounded Yet Amazed and Marveled

We say that it was a rushing mighty wind. The word wind means breath. Literally the very breath of God was present and filled the house and came upon them. It says that each person heard them which means they had a perception to understand. But it also says they were confounded. The word confounded means to disturb the mind, to be confused, to be bewildered. We need to be aware that when the spirit of understanding comes in the next awakening that we will not be able to perceive it with our mind but many will be confounded as well. But the same ones were amazed and marveled. The amazement was occurring in their spirit the confusion was n their mind. Both were happening simultaneously. There is an understanding that was beyond their natural ability to understand that they had because they had engaged into a supernatural event.

Acts 2:11-12 (KJV)

11Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God. 12They were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying one to another, What meaneth this?

It says they were amazed and also in doubt. But they could hear in detail the wonderful works of God. They become spiritually awakened. But it also disturbed the mind and natural thinking. We can see this same pattern with Jesus teaching the disciples over and over and over. Yet they were not awakened. When Jesus ascended it enabled the seven fold spirit of Christ to come upon the church in a way that had not been before. The Spirit of Understanding finally took root in the early church.

You can tell a true awakening when it touches all of society. It touches every structure. Once the Spirit of Understanding was upon the church, even the religious leaders knew. It touched their lives as well and they said things like, "These men are unlearned but they have been with Jesus." Perhaps we should leave these alone because they are from God. Even in Acts 5 after 2 died who came against the grace on the church, it says many weighed the decision to join and many more joined. Who would join something that just had 2 killed who were a part of it unless they had an understanding that was greater than the event they had just witnessed. As you start looking at all the dynamics the early church had there was one factor that can be easily traced throughout every function and activity, they had to have The Spirit of Understanding

Tongues Are A Fruit of The Spirit of Understanding

As I now look at it, tongues was a fruit of this spiritual ability of knowing, without words and without discussion or convincing the church moved as one! When they left the upper room they had not only experience this deposit but the very breath of God within them was also coming out of them allowing others to participate as well. Proverbs says out of Gods mouth proceeds knowledge wisdom and understanding.

Isaiah 11:1-5

And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots: And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD; And shall make him of quick understanding in the fear of the LORD: and he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of his ears: But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked. And righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins, and faithfulness the girdle of his reins.

Understanding = to perceive by interchanging, knowledge superior to gathering data, it is the use of all 5 senses to come to a conclusion to rightly judge, a gift from God,

There has to be an exchange to truly see the spirit of understanding is present. It has to be something that engages all 5 senses. The outpouring in Acts did this. The exchange was the wonders of God voiced in each person language. Or in other words what was voiced supernaturally was understood by each person no matter their culture! An exchange had occurred.

The Breathe of God Brings in the Fear And Reverential Awe of God

But then another insight is a little further down when it says he will be given quick understanding. This is not the ability to gain by acceleration but the word actually means:

quick understanding = ruwach - the wind or the breath of God, a wind that carries a fragrance,

It is a breath of God that allows delight in the fear of God. In the Old Testament there are 5 types of fear. This fear is the reverence and awe of God, not his judgment or wrath. It can also finally be interpreted in the whole as being endowed with a discerning the genuine principle of religious fear of God, when it lies dormant in the yet un-awakened sinner. In other words the spirit of understanding is carried by the breath of God and is released n such a way that reverential fear and awe of God is present that sinners are converted!

The final thought for this week is this. If the spirit of understanding rested upon Jesus, that means it dwelt. It did not depart. That same resting or dwelling is what is going to occur upon each life in the awakening that is coming. The spirit of understanding will make us one. It will cross all barriers and leaven all belief system. It will cause the church to come alive with purpose and destiny. It will bring in the harvest and cause them to "catch up" virtually over night. The spirit of understanding is the awakening that is coming!
