Spiritual Inheritance and The Father's Blessing

by Apostle Greg Crawford

There is so much good teaching and books on spiritual fathering, but I want to look at a different angle on this topic and give three specifics I have not seen covered before about Spiritual Fathering. We easily recognize Apostle Paul as a spiritual father. We see that he carried certain things that others desire.

1. Carrying Special Grace

1 Corinthians 3:10

10According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon .

Paul said that grace was given to him to be a wise master builder. This grace that Paul carried was an ongoing grace. This grace had power and a divine enablement with it. Some embraced Paul as a father because the grace that was upon his life affected their lives. Others did not embrace Paul at all. If you do not embrace spiritual fathers or desire to receive from them, it may be because you do not want to take advantage of the special grace that is on their lives. The word 'grace' means the spiritual condition of one governed by the power of divine grace, favor, exerting his holy influence upon souls. It comes from a root word that means 'joy, rejoicing' and 'to be glad'.

We see from the definition of the word that there is a responsibility that was upon Paul's life in the way he exerted his influence on others. Grace is a positive blessing and something that we can partake of that others carry. Grace is also transferable to others who would receive it. But grace also has influence upon those who do not receive it as well. Grace is given to individual lives and not to institutions. Institutions are formed to facilitate ministry. All not only receive this grace they pass this grace on to others to perform and do ministry.

Grace is divine favor that comes from the very nature of God. It sits upon leaders and spiritual fathers and is given to them personally. It helps to facilitate their authority, position and function. The first statement I will make about spiritual fathering is this:

A Spiritual Father must have a Special Grace upon their life that others desire!

To fully receive our full inheritance and all that it entails, we must recognize the grace that our spiritual fathers and leaders carry and receive the grace that is upon their life. This is the pathway to receive our full inheritance and positions us to receive a full father's blessing. This is walked out as we honor the appointments and assignments that have been given to us.

Hebrews 3:1-3

1Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus ; 2 Who was faithful to him that appointed him, as also Moses was faithful in all his house . 3 For this man was counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as he who hath builded the house hath more honour than the house .

Jesus was faithful to Him that appointed Him and He expects us to be faithful to those who have been appointed. Honoring our assignments requires a personal sacrifice and a personal response. Jesus was not faithful to an organization or institution but to a person. Today we do many things for an organization or structure and when we do this, we actually are denying our spiritual leaders over us. Since there is no grace upon that organization or institution there is no grace being imparted into our lives as well. But if we were doing things as our leaders had appointed us in being faithful to the appointments and assignments there also is a special grace for us as well. This creates true fathering relationships being formed out of function.

This type of faith today is a finishing faith and is not very easily seen. The institutionalized church does not trust others because of competition. But true spiritual fathering does not have competition. If there is competition in spiritual fathering, then the perspective of Sonship is probably wrong. Looking at the verse in Hebrews, we see that you cannot build anything for God if you have not been faithful in your appointments given to you by those over you. When we are faithful to the one appointed us, we show honor. I received grace with the appointment. That grace is given to us as we trust others and are approved by trustworthiness. All trust issues are really unsettled grace issues. Without settling these issues first, and having an understanding of our relationship with our spiritual fathers we will never understand our role and inheritance as sons and daughters.

2. Releasing Spiritual Inheritance

Spiritual inheritance is what a Spiritual father has attained by exercising faith towards promises God has given to them.

We have an eternal inheritance which is in the age to come, and we have a spiritual inheritance to receive now upon the earth. Our spiritual inheritance has been gained from the exercising offaith towards a promise by our spiritual fathers. Even some of these are stirred for fathers that we do not even know. Some of us are already experiencing part of our inheritance now. Our full inheritance may yet be coming. Once the spiritual leader attains a promise that God has given and reveals it to others, others then are taking advantage of inheritance. This special grace that we have already talked about is also present to help attain that promise.

Hebrews 6:12

12 That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises .

When we talk about the word 'inherit', we mainly think of getting physical natural substance. The word 'inherit' means to receive the portion assigned a person. That means that every person has a portion that they will receive no one is left out of inheritance. But inheritance is always passed down because of Sonship and is the first born right. Generational blessing is based on Sonship and is imparted by fathers to sons and daughters. Not only do we receive our inheritance by being sons and daughters, we also can receive a generational blessing as well. So once again we see the qualifier for inheritance is relationship with Father God and our spiritual fathers. We receive our inheritance by staying in relationship with the one holding our inheritance. We are not working for inheritance but we simply receive it!

Inheritance comes as we make a request of our father or spiritual father. Elisha asked for a double portion of inheritance from Elijah. He received a double inheritance. He got the inheritance of Elijah, and Father God gave him an inheritance as well. That is why he was able to do twice the number of miracles and carried twice the anointing. He made a demand or request for his inheritance and received it from two sources at the same time. The thing we must be careful of is that we will become independent and drift away from those who are carrying inheritance and we disqualify ourselves from what can truly be ours.

3. Imparting Generational Blessing

Inheritance comes to every person a portion. It is something that we automatically receive and notably will one day get. But generational blessing is different. It only comes as the father lays hands and transfers the blessing on their spiritual children. It is the transfer of special grace, mantel, and anointing that they carry being placed upon their children.

Genesis 1:28

28And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth .

By looking at those words, we see that God had finished creating all things. There was no sickness or disease and everything was perfect. Yet why did God bless Adam and Eve? Our concept of blessing is very skewed. 'Blessing' really is this:

A form of words that gives you permission and power to succeed and sustain your life to become and achieve what you are meant to be and do! It is approval upon your life to release you into your fullness. The words of blessing releases the grace the father carries into the individual's life to produce! It is permission to fulfill promise and create inheritance!

Father God blesses them with the most important blessing, permission. From this we see the third definition of a spiritual father.

Fathers are those who are spiritual leaders of ministries, who have fulfilled promises, carrying special grace, who have spiritual inheritance to pass to others.

Generational blessing flows from one generation to another generation. If it is not received by impartation, then that blessing is lost. Unlike inheritance which is the substance of a promise and can not be lsot only spent, the generational blessing or fathers blessing and permission to create future inheritance can be lost if not passed on.

Genesis 12:1-3

1Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee: 2 And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing : 3 And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed .

The blessing that Abraham received from God was about who he was and not what he would gain. Abraham's blessing was wrapped up in his call and God's covenant promises with him. Abraham blessed Isaac and Isaac blessed Jacob. We know in Genesis 25 that Esau sold his birthright to Jacob. By selling the birthright, not only did he relinquish his inheritance but also relinquished the father's blessing. The Bible says that he actually despised his birthright. The word 'despised' means contemptible or to hold little value. As he passed on his inheritance, he also was passing on his generational blessing. The New Testament warns us not to be ungodly like Esau for despising his inheritance. This starts by not honoring our spiritual fathers or respecting our fathers and what they have labored for. You see the generational blessing flows from the father's mouth. If you despise your father, the source, you despise all that comes from that source and you only affect yourself. How do we honor the mouthpiece of God which holds our blessing? Because Jacob showed honor, not only would he receive inheritance but also a father's blessing. This blessing was transferred by the laying on of hands and was in the voice. Esau could not attain the blessing even with tears because it already had been transferred.

Since the father's blessing was the future, it carried greater weight than the birthright

The blessing held the power for the future that had created the present wealth. In other words, it was the source of the inheritance. Without the father's blessing, all that remained was the inheritance to build on. But with the father's blessing, it enabled a new inheritance to be built as well!

Today's spiritual fathers are those that have a special grace upon their life. They are men and women who have wrestled in faith for promises and obtained an inheritance to be passed on. Spiritual fathers are those who have the power within their voice, to release permission, and by laying on of hands to transfer our Father's blessing for a future inheritance to be birthed. It is imperative that true Spiritual Fathers bless their children with impartation of words. It is also imperative that true sons and daughters receive the grace that is upon their fathers. It is imperative that they make sure that they honor their assignments, and stay in relationship with those that hold their inheritance. It is also important that they seek after that father's blessing and those fathers truly would bless them!
